If you want to get married in a church, you should contact the vicar responsible for the church/parish where you want the ceremony to take place.

The Church of the Faroe Islands also has an integration vicar, Marjun Lómaklett, who can help newcomers understand the church and find the appropriate contact Fólkakirkjan

The exact documents depend on your circumstances and country of residence. If you have previously been married and divorced, the Church says that a divorce certificate must be submitted to the vicar. You should therefore contact the vicar before making arrangements and ask exactly which documents apply to you.

Always contact the relevant vicar or municipality before ordering certificates or booking the wedding date. This will help you avoid obtaining documents that are expired or not required.

A civil marriage is performed by an authorised municipal authority. The ceremony is normally conducted in Faroese with an English translation and is free of charge.

When should you apply?

For a civil wedding in the NorthEast Municipality's:

• The Notice of Marriage must be submitted no earlier than four months before the planned wedding.

• It must normally be submitted no later than four weeks before the wedding.

• For weddings during weeks 34–36, the NorthEast Municipality's currently requires the application no later than six weeks before the ceremony.

• The NorthEast Municipality's do not conduct civil weddings during weeks 31–33.

Because procedures can differ between municipalities, newcomers should confirm the deadlines with the municipality where they intend to marry.

The documents depend on your nationality, residence and previous marital status. For foreign applicants, documents including:

• Notice of Marriage form

• Birth certificate and/or other documentation of name and date of birth

• Passport

• Certificate of marital status

• Final divorce documents, if previously married and divorced

• Death certificate of a former spouse, if widowed

• Residence permit or visa where applicable

• Two witnesses and their names and addresses

• The municipality may require additional documentation depending on your circumstances.

A certificate of marital status must be sufficiently recent. The certificate must not be more than four months old on the wedding day.

If your documents are not in English, they must be translated by an authorized translator.

Civil marriage is available for same-sex couples. The NorthEast Municipality's provides separate Notice of Marriage forms for:

• women and woman

• man and man

For a church wedding, the situation should be checked directly with the Church of the Faroe Islands, so it should not be assumed that the civil rules automatically apply to a church ceremony.

For a civil wedding in The NorthEast, two witnesses attend and sign the marriage register. If the couple cannot provide two witnesses, NorthEast municipality's can arrange to witnesses at the ceremony.

For a church wedding, the Church states that the couple should find two witnesses for the ceremony.

Church wedding

If your wedding took place in a church, the marriage certificate is available from the vicar/church office responsible for the parish where the wedding took place. The marriage certificates are available in Faroese and English.

Civil wedding

If your wedding was a civil wedding, contact the municipality that conducted and registered the marriage. After a civil wedding the NorthEast municipality's provide an international marriage certificate in Faroese and English. If you were married in another municipality, contact that municipality rather than a NorthEast municipality.
