Civil registration number

Everyone who lives i the Faroe islands is required to have a civil registration number called a P-number.

A p-number is the Faroese personal identification number required for dealing with public authorities, taxes, social security, and receiving a salary.

If you plan to stay or work in the Faroe Islands for more than 180 days as a Nordic citizen, or more than 90 days as a non-Nordic citizen, you must register with your local municipality. Non-Nordic citizens also need a residence permit; information and assistance are available from the Faroese Police and the Faroese Immigration Office (Útlendingastovan)

If you stay for less than 180 days and do not register with a municipality, you must obtain a provisional P-number from TAKS.

The Faroese P-number consists of 9 digits. The first six digits represent the person's date of birth (day, month, and year), while the last three digits form a unique personal identification number. The final digit also indicates legal sex, with odd numbers for men and even numbers for women.

You can obtain a P-number after registering in the Faroe Islands or by applying for a provisional P-number through TAKS if you are staying temporarily. Read about applying for a temporary P-number through TAKS.

Your P-number is used to access public healthcare and other government services. You are automatically enrolled in the Faroese health insurance scheme and can choose a general practitioner. If you receive a Faroese salary, your health insurance contributions are deducted through your taxes.
