Pregnancy and childbirth
You should contact your doctor when you are pregnant to get relevant information and support throughout your pregnancy.
Pregnancy
After the doctor confirms the pregnancy, he or she will refer you to a midwife. You can get information about relevant courses and antenatal education from your midwife and your doctor.
Information, tests and counselling related to prenatal examinations are provided free of charge to pregnant women.
Health services related to pregnancy, childbirth and children's healthcare are free of charge for people covered by the Faroese national health insurance system, Heilsutrygd. https://www.heilsutrygd.fo/en
Prenatal care is provided through primary healthcare and the hospitals.
Childbirth
The National Hospital in Tórshavn has the maternity ward and is where hospital births take place.
Parents can also receive child-health services after the baby is born.
Join a mother's group
Most new mothers in The Faroe Islands join a mother’s group. A mother's group consists of 4-6 women who have given birth around the same time. You can get help and support from other mothers in your situation.
Your health visitor can arrange for you to join a mother’s group. You can choose if you would like to participate or not.
Parental-leave
The Faroe Islands also have a parental-leave system, including maternity, paternity/co-mother leave and parental allowance.
